Praise from the teacher

Making the teacher happy seems to be a desire that never leaves, if you had it to begin with. I always got a warm happy glow when I received a “well done!” from a teacher, or a written comment complimenting homework I’d worked hard to prepare. I’d slave for hours just to get that pat on the shoulder, that pleased smile, that big red A+ on my page.

Now that I’m in a formal class for the first time in almost a decade, I have not lost that craving for praise from the teacher. Verbal encouragement and compliments are my incentive to keep working hard. Tonight, for the first time since I was a child, I got a little red smiley face on my homework. I was half joking when I told my friends about it – you know, role reversal, teacher getting smiley face on her homework – but not entirely. It really did give me that same glow of pride I got when I was at school!

It just makes me happy.
