Saying hello

There’s an elderly man who lives in a beautiful old house that I pass every morning on my way to work.

Often, he’ll be standing on his doorstep enjoying the morning sunshine, or pottering around in the small garden. When he sees me coming, he pops his head over the gate and says “Good morning!”, giving me a smile and a very Western-style wave. In response, I always say “Annyeonghaseyo?”, giving him a smile and a very Korean-style bow. Then he goes on with his pottering, and I continue on my journey to work.

It’s only a small, unimportant moment, but it just makes me happy.
